PUNCH x PARADOX
PIANO & TROMPET
On Thursday 21 May, PUNCH, in collaboration with Paradox Tilburg, presents pianist Jeroen van Vliet and trumpeter Koen Smits. In response to Steve McQueen’s exhibition ATLAS, they create music that leaves room for imagination, memory and the unexpected. With piano sounds and trumpet lines that emerge in the moment, Van Vliet and Smits create an open, cinematic soundtrack without images.
With their musical versatility, pianist Jeroen van Vliet and trumpeter Koen Smits are among the most creative jazz musicians in the country. They perform with an open mind, transcending the boundaries between composition and improvisation, acoustic and electric, and tradition and innovation. With his exquisite touch on the piano, Jeroen van Vliet enchants time and again. It is no surprise that he won the prestigious Boy Edgar Prize. As a trumpeter, Koen Smits can play with virtuosity, but is equally adept at pacing himself and painting dreamlike soundscapes with just a few notes.
“The pianist possesses a remarkably nuanced touch and demonstrates that it is not only important when you press the keys, but also when you release them.”

“On Gulli Gudmundsson’s new album, trumpeter Koen Smits is the biggest surprise”
