What happens when colour becomes more than a purely visual phenomenon?

For Sigmar Polke, painting was a continuous experiment with pigments, materials and chemical processes. During this De Pont College, two researchers explore how colour, matter and meaning come together in his work.

What can a pigment tell us? And what stories lie behind colour? During De Pont College: Sigmar Polke – Colour and Meaning on Thursday 26 November, art historian Kyveli Mavrokordopoulou and Kathrin Barutzki, curator at the Anna Polke Foundation, examine Polke’s exploration of materials and colour from different perspectives.

Taking Farbtafeln, currently on view in the exhibition, as her starting point, Mavrokordopoulou explores the ecological, colonial and social histories of colourants. Barutzki introduces Athanor NOW, the international research project centred on Polke’s installation Athanor, presented in the German Pavilion at the 1986 Venice Biennale.

The lectures will be followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion. Attendance is free, but booking is required.
