Blind self portraits. That’s what Cruzvillegas calls the collections of papers, which taken together most closely resemble some kind of city map. A thick layer of acrylic paint conceals the fact that what you are seeing is actually travel tickets, receipts, newspaper articles, postcards, magazine clippings and sketches. Every bit of paper is evidence of one of the artist’s purchases, trips or experiences. They are like pages from his diary, scattered across the walls. Cruzvillegas likes to draw inspiration from his environment. He often works with found materials, turning them into unplanned works of art. The ‘self portraits’ reveal little about the maker’s identity; only the title gives us a hint. By intentionally keeping us in the dark, Cruzvillegas invites us to fantasize about the artist and his life.
