Interpretation, misinterpretation and transformed meaning play a significant role in the work of Bosmans. 9 Sisters is based on a story from Ovid's The Metamorphoses, in which nine gossiping sisters turn into chattering magpies. To this Bosmans adds nine different ducks in response to a different version of this story. Hanging in the dialogue balloons that emerge from their bills are triptychs where, in 'logos' reminiscent of heraldry, themes from the past and present are combined. One of the triptychs refers, for instance, to the manipulation of plants and animals. In the central panels Bosmans consistently combines a pattern, based on a medieval sewing pattern of squirrel fur, with a preen gland that protects ducks from bacteria. He thus offers retroactive protection, as it were, to the squirrel.
