In Nature Morte Halloubi pays homage to the work of the Italian artist Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) who spent his entire life painting still lifes. By juxtaposing those works with art-historical events from the first half of the twentieth century, the tumultuous age in which Morandi lived, Halloubi examines the relationship between the artist and the times in which he worked. In a dry and calm manner he lays out the facts without bias and, while doing so, contemplates the time and space that Morandi required for himself. This leads to the question as to whether art should be politics, especially when the world's tumult is increasing. Or is it actually the right and the duty of the artist to remain detached from this and make personal choices?
