Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca

Brasilia, 1980 (Wagner) / Munich, 1975 (De Burca), live and work in Recife, BRA

Bárbara Wagner (1980, Brasília) and Benjamin de Burca (1975, Munich) have been an artistic duo since 2011. They live and work in Recife. Their video works are hybrid musical collages that take shape in close collaboration with the people who appear in them. In their work Wagner and De Burca focus on specific genres within popular culture, showing special concern for local musical/dance traditions and the way in which these change over the years due to economic, social and cultural circumstances. Much of their work relates to musical traditions in the northeastern part of Brazil, but they have also made films about the German schlager culture or the ‘spoken word’ traditions of African and Caribbean immigrants in Canada.
